The "14th December" communal bank will begin its eighth loan cycle with Pro Mujer, through the German Busch regional office. This communal bank is made up of ten members and is run by a board of directors where Virginia is president. The members of the communal bank have various kinds of business, including: making hats, making chicken runs, minibus helpers, producing baby clothes, selling furniture, a bed and breakfast, selling bread, selling sweets, spinning vicuna wool, and a butcher's shop.

This loan will benefit small business owners in Virginia's group. Virginia tells us that she joined Pro Mujer four years ago, following an invitation from one of the bank's promoters, who went to visit her in her home. Virginia currently has a business doing knitting work. She started this business following a recommendation from a friend, who taught her the trade.

This loan will be used to increase capital, by buying wools from the wholesalers in the city of El Alto. She will then produce the items to sell. This work allows Virginia to earn an income to support her family: Virginia is married and has two children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Virginia tells us that she likes to share with her friends at the meetings.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
