The communal bank "Nuevo Amanecer" is comprised of eight women who live in the community of Zhidmad in Cuenca. It is a place of beautiful scenery and green fields, thanks to the vegetation and crops grown in the village. The architecture is a mix of old and new. The local people, just like the communal bank members, are kind, gentle, cheerful people who do all they can for the well-being of their families and to give their children a better future. Their main source of pride is that they maintain the culture and traditions of their villages.

One of the members of the group is Mercy. This is her fourth loan with her friends and colleagues of the communal bank "Nuevo Amanecer". She enjoys being in the group because all the members are supportive and they have become one big family.

Mercy, 20, is married and has a three-year-old daughter. Her husband works for a private company and they live in a house with relatives.

Mercy takes care of her daughter but also helps her husband with the household economy by raising animals such as chickens, guinea pigs, pigs and cattle. She also works in agriculture for home consumption and for commerce.

She plans to use the loan to buy chickens, guinea pigs and animal feed so she can continue with her business. Her goal is to have her own home.

The small photos are of two members who were unable to be present for the group photo.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
