María Irene
María is 46 years old, married, and has three children. She runs her own business, a general store located in a very commercial area in the municipality where she lives. She started working as an independent merchant due to economic problems that the family was facing. In her first job as an independent she walked around the market place carrying a portable food stall. Little by little the demand for her products increased and allowed her business to grow. After some time she was able to rent a place where she started selling clothes, kitchen utensils, toys, and second hand clothes. This eventually made her business what it is today.

Her drive, endeavor, and dedication push her to find new ways to progress. This is why she is requesting a loan, which she will use to buy wholesale merchandise such as toys, clothes, kitchen-ware, etc. That way, she will be able to stock her business with a greater variety of products in order to satisfy the increasing demand during the upcoming Christmas season. The result will be an increased income with which she will continue supporting her husband in covering the household expenses. María will continue struggling to achieve her dream of opening another business in a nearby municipality in order to improve her income and offer her family economic stability so that they can enjoy a better quality of life.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
