Lourdes María
Lourdes, 27, lives with her life partner and six-year-old son. She inherited a store from her grandmother ten years ago, a business that had more than 30 years’ history which had made it very well-known in the zone where she lives. She works with her mother every day from 10am to 10pm and to earn extra family income she alternates working in her store with working as an employee in a kiosk beside her house. While she’s working at that job her mother watches the store.

She’s a cheerful, enthusiastic, persevering woman who has gone through both economic and social order difficulties because her town used to be very dangerous and there was much violence. In addition, roads were in very poor condition and people no longer visited the town which led to drop in sales and income and resources to stock the store well.

This is what motivates her to request the loan for she wants to buy stock at wholesale (packaged snacks, dairy products, crackers and cookies, grains, soft-drinks, cleaning supplies, etc.) and some shelving to store the goods. She will thus be able to provide her business with a better appearance that will lead to increased sales and profits from her labor.

Lourdes wants to continue working because her main dream is to make the business stronger and better-known; to make it grow and turn it into a supermarket so that in future his economic stability will be stable enough for he to buy her own house and enjoy better living conditions and well-being in company of the people she loves.

More information about this loan

By funding this loan, you are promoting entrepreneurship in remote regions, including areas recovering from guerilla warfare in Colombia, and helping to reverse the rural exodus which occurred in the past decades when a the rural population fled their countryside homes for the safer cities.

This Kiva loan was created by Kiva's field partner Interactuar specifically for Kiva funding, in an effort to reach more borrowers in rural areas. Most of the Interactuar's lending operations are focused in urban parts of Medellin. But this loan product is designed to provide working capital to riskier agricultural businesses who have been traditionally excluded from the finance sector.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
