Claudia Patricia
Claudia is 33 years old and is a single mother to her 5-year-old son. Three years ago she converted part of her home into a small office supplies store and general store so that she could spend more time at home with her son and generate additional income. With some advice and guidance from friends who had also started their own businesses, Claudia has learned many business management principles. Claudia works seven days a week from 10:00am until 8:00pm, and she also offers manicure, pedicure and hair salon services on the side to generate additional income. Her entrepreneurial spirit and motivation to get ahead in life and provide for her son have led her to this loan.

With the support from this loan, Claudia plans to purchase purchase a manicure/pedicure chair, as well as the necessary tools for her beauty business (scissors, hair straightener, hair brushes, nail polish, nail polish remover, etc.). She also plans to purchase merchandise in bulk to stock her office/school supplies shop (markers, pencils, notebooks and other items). She hopes that this investment will help her to expand the range of services she can offer clients and will also allow her to generate more income to provide for her son and cover household expenses. Claudia's dream is to one day open up a store in the center of town closer to a greater customer base and to give her son the chance to receive an education.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
