Luz Elena
Luz has been running her own business for more than 20 years. It’s a small fruit shop located in the stadium area in the city she lives in. She offers all types of fresh fruit, fruit salads, ‘salpicón’ [fruit mixed with soft-drink], packaged snacks, ice-cream, etc. She works every day from 7am to 7pm and on Sunday extends business hours because of the large number of people that come into the sector.

The business was her parents’ initially and they decided to pass in on to her so that she’d run it and generate enough income to help her husband with the household expenses and provide her two children with an excellent education.

The client is a driven, active, hardworking woman who is always seeking new alternatives that will make it possible for her to advance and reach her goals. She’s encouraged to request the loan in order to buy a freezer and stock at wholesale (fruit, ice-cream, packaged snacks, milk cream, etc.) This will make it possible for her to properly store her products and be able to offer quality products to her customers. In addition, she’ll have a wider variety of food on sale which will attract new, potential customers resulting in higher sales and earned income.

Luz will thus be able to continue with her work for in future she hopes to reach her dream of enlarging her establishment to have the opportunity of generating employment improving not only her family’s quality of life but also that of others who will go into this hard work.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
