Sokhkak is 19 years old and a single man living with his parents in Kep province. He is staff working for a guest house, earning a normal salary of $110.00 per month. Sokhkak graduated from high school in 2012 and continued studying at CUS University. He is a second-year student, majoring in law. Sokhkak, through savings from his small salary, could afford to pay for his first academic-year course. However, he now is facing difficulty to pay for his education fees again, so he decided to borrow a loan from HKL in the amount of 500 US dollars to cover his education costs. Sokhkak, pictured here, is committed to study hard with the funds from this loan. His parents, who are not included in the picture, will be his joint borrowers and also responsible for principal repayments. He expresses thanks to his parents and appreciates the help of people all around the world who have contributed to programs like Kiva via its partners, HKL which have supported his education individually as well as other students.

This loan is part of HKL's new higher education loan program, designed to help students pursuing university degrees to afford tuition and other school-related expenses. Through this program, HKL expects to increase the number of Cambodians with access to higher education and better-paying jobs. Ultimately, it aims to reduce poverty and aid economic development in Cambodia. HKL has designed this loan product to meet student needs including a lower interest rate, grace period on principal while the student is in school, and longer loan term.
