Khean, age 50 and a widow, is a resident from Bateay Meanchey province where she does her business to generate a decent income for her family. She has three children, two of whom still rely on her. One of her dependent children is studying in local university and the other is helping her business. As a single mother, she does rice farming and selling some grocery items at home. This business that she has occupied for 8 years has returned her about USD3 per day with USD 1.5 for saving after deducting necessary expenses. Never been with VisionFund(Kiva’s partner) before, Khean is applying for an education loan in order to pay for the tuition fee for her son who wants to pursue bachelor degree majoring in Engineering. She hopes that she can support her son’s education on time.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
