Sophorn, a local villager from Kampong Cham province where she does her business, rice farming, is in her early 40s and a hardworking mother of three kids. Her husband also helps her to earn more income through working as a paid worker. Engaging in this current business for all of her life has enabled her to generate about USD4 per day.

With VisionFund (Kiva’s partner), Sophorn is not in her first cycle. Her past loan has enabled her to stabilize her living conditions and to keep her kids in school. Now, she wants to support one of her sons who wants to earn a bachelor degree, majoring in Finance and Banking in a local university in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. She will spend the entire loan portion to pay school fees for her son. She hopes that he can get a good job after graduation.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
