Sonja is 32, married, the mother of two children, ages 6 and 10, who attend school. They all live in a small village in a minority community.

Sonja works in a clinic doing administrative work and although her husband receives a pension from a company that he worked for prior to the war, he also does some agricultural work that he has been doing for many years. Together with her husband they plant corn and wheat and work on their neighbors' land when she has more time after her regular work and harvesting her own land.

Sonja is requesting a loan in order to purchase a machine to help her better to work the land and be more efficient and effective. She is very grateful to Kiva lenders for the financial support given to her and she promises to pay her installments in a punctual manner.

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.
