Ruth
Ruth is 23 years old. She lives with her husband José Luis and her one-year-old daughter. They live in a rented house close to their relatives.

Ruth works farming potatoes, peas, beans, corn, and different vegetables like cilantro, carrots, and lettuce. She starts working in the early hours of the morning along with her husband. They have been farming together for 3 years. They learned farming techniques from their parents, who were raised on the land that now belongs to them, but that previously was their ancestors’.

They also cultivate a small rented farm in order to produce their crops in greater quantities. She likes harvesting tubers (potato) because she enjoys collecting them from the furrows in order to sell them later in the market in the city of Tarma, where she is known for the quality of her harvests. However, it is difficult for her to transport her products to the place of sale because of the heaviness of the sacks.

From the earnings that she gets from her work, she invests and saves them so that in the future, she can build her own house and acquire more productive land where she will be able to farm amaryllis, chancan, and other rare varieties of potato, as they are more marketable.

This is her fourth loan with Kiva; in all this time, she has shown herself to be a responsible and committed person with her association. She is motivated by committing to be punctual with her quotas. Ruth will invest the S/.3000 soles in the purchase of organic fertilizer to nourish her crops.
