The communal bank was formed on December 20, 2002, in the Tambo Real community located in the Zurite district of the province of Anta. It has been in operation for five years and currently 24 members belong to the bank - 19 women and five men. The economic activities of the community in which the members participate are cattle raising, processing milk into yogurt and cheese, small animal sales and [the sale of] agricultural products. The communal bank is named after the community’s patron saint whose anniversary is August 24th, the date when the bank will celebrate it’s fifth anniversary. The history of the bank is linked to the origin of the community. Mutual support known as “Ayni” (“today for you, tomorrow for me”), solidarity and respect are the community’s inherent values, whose practice is part of its ancestral customs. A product of these values is the communal bank that has a history of good credit. Currently it’s in its fourth cycle.Translated from Spanish by Hugh Yarbrough, Kiva Volunteer.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
