This communal bank is made up of eleven members and is run by a board of directors where Magdalena is president. The members of the communal bank have various kinds of business, including: a grocery store, selling bread, selling meals, selling potatoes, a beauty salon, and knitting blankets.

This loan will benefit small business owners in Magdalena's group. Magdalena tells us that she joined Pro Mujer three years ago, following an invitation from a friend, who is a member of the communal bank. Magdalena currently has a grocery. She has been learning this trade since she was a girl and worked in a grocery store. With a little capital that she had, Magdalena opened her own grocery store.

This loan will be used to increase capital, by buying rice, sugar, and pastas from the wholesalers in the city of El Alto. Magdalena will then sell the products. This work allows Lucy to earn an income to support her family: Magdalena has a partner and a son.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Magdalena tells us that she likes the training and the savings that she makes.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
