Claudia Milena
Claudia is 34 years old and a stylist, work she has done throughout her working life in different hairdressing salons. Claudia started learning this trade when she was very young as her family were having financial difficulties and Claudia had fallen pregnant at 14. Because of this Claudia needed a job in order to earn an income to pay for the baby and support the family's finances. After starting beautician classes at a local institute, Claudia found work in a hairdressing salon and, later, did further training and specialisations, increasing her knowledge and opening up the path to more possibilities in the working world. After working as an employee for a number of years, Claudia decided to go it alone and started to offer her services, going round to her customers' homes. Her determination and enterprising spirit, and her desire to do better, have led Claudia to look for opportunities to get ahead. So, she is applying for her fifth loan, which she will use to buy fixed assets (mirrors, display cases), and supplies and merchandise in bulk (dyes, shampoo, hair treatments, hair accessories); she will also make improvements to her premises. All this will allow Claudia's business to grow as she wants to start her own beauty salon in her home. There she will provide service to her customers, who will be more comfortable. All of this will result in an increase in sales, which she can use to continue supporting the family finances. Claudia will also be able to offer her son, who is in his teenage years, a better education. Claudia dreams of strengthening and expanding her business. She wants to turn it into a great beauty salon that is well-known and profitable, and then to be able to offer jobs to other people. In this way she can improve many other people's quality of life, including her family's

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
