Rithy is 34 years old and a married mother blessed with one son who is still in school. To struggle for a living, she plants cucumbers for resale as her main source of income; it is the business that she has had for 10 years. This is Rithy's fourth loan with VisionFund (Kiva’s partner). She has repaid her past loans with success improving her living conditions. For this cycle, she is taking out an education loan to support her brother who wants to pursue a bachelor's degree majoring in Engineering. She will spend her entire loan to pay her younger brother's tuition fees. She hopes that her brother will get a good job after he graduates.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of VisionFund Cambodia’s higher education program, designed to provide financing to students in poor households who otherwise lack the financial support to continue their studies. Very few students have the financial resources necessary to go to college. VisionFund Cambodia has designed a lower-interest rate loan product for students, given the financial benefits associated with financing this loan upfront on Kiva. It is disbursed to the borrower in annual installments.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
