The "El Reencuentro" communal bank meets every fortnight in the Tosagua canton, a place which is known for being very dynamic, where most of the inhabitants work in agriculture or rearing animals, as there is a lot of vegetation in the area. This group is made up of 9 women and 2 men who decided to get together and form this communal bank which will help them a lot since they will use the loans to improve their small businesses. They work in different jobs such as sales, rearing animals and agriculture.

One of the members of the group is María who is 29 years old. She lives with her partner with whom she has an 8 year old son who is studying at the primary school. Her husband is a bus ticket inspector. María is a very hard-working woman who does all she can to give her family the best. She sells equipment for a telephone company but she also has her own business. With her mum's help she makes delicious dishes to sell; they make lunches and also at the weekends and for special occasions they make food for any kind of social event. They have had the business for more than 6 years and so they have a very good clientele. María's job is part-time which gives her time to fit in all her other tasks.

María will use the loan to buy rice, meat, fish and other provisions for preparing the food. Along with everyone else in the communal bank, this is her first loan and she is happy with the speed with which the loan was granted. Her goals are to keep moving forward with the business and give her son a good education.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
