Santos, aged 26, is a certified organic cacao farmer. He lives in the beautiful village of Silver Creek. Santos is the last child of the family; he oversees the farm. He also takes care of his parents who are unable to do any farm work.
Santos got motivated about cacao farming on his own initiative, following his father everyday to the farm. He manages his 1,400 mature cacao trees. Santos says that he finds challenges with pests such as birds and Wee Wee ants. He also cultivates different types of farm crops such as beans, corn rice etc. His time is spent mostly on farming.
Santos is requesting this loan to help him in hire a worker to assist in cleaning his mature trees. He just recently pruned the trees and due to other farm work, he has limited time to properly clean his farm.
Santos future plans are to get married and expand more cacao trees.
About Maya Mountain Cacao
Maya Mountain Cacao (MMC) is a for-profit social enterprise that sources premium cacao beans from smallholder farmers in Belize. Founded in 2010, it generates income for marginalized farmers while promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the southern part of the country.
These cacao farmers use Kiva credit to invest in farm maintenance, improvement and expansion. For example, they might hire workers to help with the harvest or buy inputs such as better tools and seedlings.
