Luyen, pictured first on the right, is 52 years old and married with two grown children. As a farmer, she makes about VND 800,000 a month. She has been a member of her local Women's Union since 1980 and recently joined a campaign to improve her community's sanitation and hygiene. Currently, her family does not have a hygienic toilet. With this loan, Luyen will install a toilet that will improve the quality of life for all of her family members and help her family and community avoid the diseases and infections commonly associated with unsanitary latrines.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of EastMeetsWest Foundation's initiative to expand access to clean water and improved sanitation to poor, rural households in Vietnam. These loans reduce rates of waterborne disease and increase dignity. When you fund this loan, it will be disbursed to the foundation, which will then lend the funds to the provincial Women's Union, an organization that works closely with EastMeetsWest to provide funding to poor families to improve water access, build clean latrines, teach improved sanitation practices and more.

About Thrive Networks

Thrive Networks creates sustainable and catalytic solutions to difficult development problems. Specifically, the organization works with community groups in rural, underserved areas to help make household access to clean water and improved sanitation desirable and affordable. Funds from Kiva lenders will be used to help borrowers finance the construction of a household latrine, ensuring a healthier future for each family and the wider community.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
