The members run a variety of businesses such as selling socks, groceries, repairing cell phones, knitting and selling woolen clothing, and carpentry.

The loan they are seeking will benefit women like Sra. Teresa who run small businesses. She joined Pro Mujer three years ago at the invitation of a friend who was also a member of the institution. Now she has a business selling socks. Friends taught her how to sell her merchandise when she needed to earn money after the death of her husband.

The loan money will be used to buy more socks which Teresa obtains from stores at wholesale prices and then sells on her stall. The income from this work enables her to support her family; she is a widow with two children.

When she is asked what she most likes about Pro Mujer, Teresa responds that she likes learning about health and savings.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
