The communal bank ‘Antawara’ will begin its second loan cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the Patacamaya regional office. It is composed of eight members and is governed by a board of directors of which Erodita is treasurer. The businesses carried out by the members of the bank are diverse and include selling livestock, selling potatoes and chuño (dehydrated potatoes), selling sweaters and blankets, and selling artisan ponchos, blankets, and aguayos (traditional blankets).

The loan they will take out will benefit small micro-businesses of which Erodita is a member. She indicates that five months ago she became a member of Pro Mujer thanks to a promotional invitation when they were in her area. Currently, she runs a business raising livestock that started 20 years ago, which she learned by helping her parents in the same business.

Erodita is taking this loan out to increase capital. She will buy livestock from the neighboring fairs and afterwards she will raise them at her home. This type of work allows her to generate resources to maintain her family since she is married and has six children. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responded that she likes the trainings on health and loans.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
