Beatrice
Beatrice is 30 years old and divorced with four children. She earns her income through the sale of crops and monthly compensation as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools. On her land Beatrice grows maize, beans and millet. She also has chicken, pigs and goats.

Beatrice has served as a CKW for the last two years, and she looks forward to renewing her CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW she will use the materials in her business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar-charging set and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of her village, helping them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes.

With the additional money she will earn as a CKW, Beatrice plans to pay school fees and settle medical bills for her children. Her biggest dream in life is to become a model farmer in her community and produce more quality crops that fetch high prices.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of Grameen Foundation's AppLab program and Community Knowledge Worker initiative, providing borrowers with mobile phones, solar chargers and other equipment to become knowledge centers for their smallholder farming communities.

With these tools, community knowledge workers can help their neighbors access information and advice to improve their crop yields, connect with markets and generate more income. They can also conduct mobile surveys to help local organizations better meet farmers' needs. Community knowledge workers make monthly salaries based on the number of surveys they collect, enabling them to repay Grameen for the equipment.
