The NEVADITAS DE CORAPATA communal bank will begin its first cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Copacabana center. The group is made up of nine members and directed by a board of directors, where Juana serves as the president. The members have different businesses, such as blanket making, sweater knitting, and livestock sales.

This loan will benefit their small businesses, including Juana’s. This is her first time with Pro Mujer, having joined on the invitation of a promoter who visited her in her home. She has an alpaca blanket business and says that she learned this business a few years ago out of necessity, since this is a product that her friends request so that they could sell them in the La Paz fairs.

She is asking for this loan to buy alpaca yarn from the traditional fairs in El Alto, and make her wares to order. This type of work will allow her to generate income in order to maintain her household; she is married and has three children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she says that she likes the training in health care, loans, and finance.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
