Benkadi ("Together we are strong") is a group of seven women from the first district of the city of Koutiala (region of Sikasso, Republic of Mali). The group members average 37 years of age, are married, and are mothers with at least five children each. They all live in traditional polygamous families with their parents-in-law, co-spouses, children, their husbands, and brothers and sisters.

Linked by ties of profession, blood, and marriage, these women do dye work (learned from parents practicing this work) and commerce in beauty products, dried smoked fish, etc.

Concerned about increasing the size of their businesses, the members decided to join the loan program of the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso four years ago. They have already benefited from nine loans, and each of the preceding ones was correctly repaid.

The current loan will be used to buy 5 boxes of beauty products (from Bamako, the capital of the Republic of Mali) from wholesalers, some baskets of smoked and dried fish (from Korientzé, a fishing village in Mopti Prefecture), and a sizeable quantity of ingredients for dye work (on location at the grand marketplace of the city of Koutiala) from stall-keepers selling at the market.

These women of the Benkadi Group are very enterprising and known for the quality of their work. Their goods are sold retail, cash and often credit accepted, in the districts of the city of Koutiala. The goods are sold door-to-door and in the marketplaces of neighboring villages, to a customer base made up essentially of caterers, retailers, and women.

They intend to realize an average profit of 100,000 francs CFA, which will be used to cover the loan interest, to address family expenses, and to invest the rest in the businesses.
