Madalena is married, with five children (and none of the children goes to school). She takes care of additional family members.
She sells charcoal at the market on both a wholesale and a retail basis. She has been in this business for 10 years. She works seven days a week. She generates additional income through rental rooms and market vending.
She has applied for a loan of UGX 3,000,000 from MCDT-SACCO to buy bags of charcoal. Her major business challenges include seasonality (the rainy season, which hinders her movements) and ever increasing prices of charcoal.
She aspires of getting permanent business premises and also to buy a plot of land. She resides in her own house; the family has access to electricity but not to piped water. Her monthly expenses include medication and feeding the family.
