In this Group: Fanta , Tata, Mah , Mah, Niele
The DJEKAFO group is part of the BENKADI association of TIELE. It consists of five married women who know one another as neighbors and through ties of kinship. They average 45 years of age and four children each. Their activities include buying and selling condiments and restaurant services, which is the activity conducted by FANTA, sitting on the right in the photo. These women live in large traditional families in TIELE, sub-prefecture of BAGUINEDA (region of Koulikoro, Republic of Mali). They have been engaged in small trade for several years and they are in high demand.

To meet the growing needs of their clientele, the group members decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance program. This is their 3rd group loan. FANTA plans to use her credit to buy cereals (millet and rice) and various condiments (peppers, tomatoes, onions, cabbage, condensed tomato products) for her restaurant activity. She buys her merchandise from BAMAKO wholesalers and sells her food in TIELE, at retail, cash or credit, to a clientele consisting of both men and women.

She hopes to earn a monthly profit of 30,000FCFA, which will allow her to repay her loan and to reinvest a portion in her activity.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
