Lucio Vidal
Lucio is a small farmer in northern Nicaragua. He is 36 years old and has 3 children with his wife. They live on their small 7 acre farm, 2 of which are for coffee. This small farmer has produced 40, 35 and 50 quintals of parchment coffee the last 3 cycles. For this new cycle, he is asking for a loan to guarantee fertilizer and foliar for his coffee crop, according to basic technical requirements for his coffee, in order to improve the product quality. He believes that with his hard work and care he will be able to obtain better yields and with them better income that will allow him to give his family better living conditions.

Lucio es un pequeño productor de la zona norte de Nicaragua. Cuenta con 36 años de edad y 3 hijos que ha procreado junto a su compañera, con los cuales vive en su pequeña finca de 4 manzanas, de las cuales 2 son de café. Este pequeño productor ha tenido obtenido 40, 35 y 50 quintales de café pergamino en los últimos 3 ciclos. Para este nuevo ciclo, él está solicitando un crédito para garantizar la fertilización y el foleo de su cafetal según los requerimientos técnicos de su plantación, a fin de mejorar la calidad e incrementar la producción. Considera que con su esfuerzo y cuidado podrá obtener mejores rendimientos y con ellos mayores ingresos que le permitirán darle mejores condiciones a su familia.

This loan is part of PAC's effort to help farmers expand their existing crop yields and increase their incomes. Coffee production loans help farmers increase their crop yields by enabling them pay to clean, prune, fertilize, and conserve their fields, deliver water, and replant trees needed to shade coffee plants. Farmers working with PAC also receive technical assistance and commercial services, as well as access to Fair Trade and organic certifications and international markets.

About PAC

PAC (Association for People in Community Action) is a community development organization in Nicaragua that offers clients loans, technical assistance and access to markets. Founded in 1996, it’s a joint initiative between World Relief Nicaragua and local farmers. PAC believes that increased agricultural production and improved technology can bring economic development to high poverty zones.

Some loans from PAC are disbursed in partial payments over a period of four to six months depending on the needs of the borrower. The borrower will not be charged interest on any funds that have not yet been disbursed. If the borrower decides not to use the entire loan amount, the unused portion will be returned to lenders in the form of a pre-payment.
