The borrower, Sevdije, is 32 years-old and a mother of 5 children ranging from 1 to 10 years old. They live in the southern part of Kosovo in a Roma community. Although Sevdije is not working at all she receives a small amount of money as part of a social pension and her husband works sometimes doing construction and transporting goods for others when there is a need. This loving family lives in very poor conditions but Sevdije is still always smiling despite her situation. The house that she and her family live in is very old and needs urgent renovation.

Sevdije is in need of a loan so that she can change the doors and windows before the winter comes. This loan will help her to keep her utility costs down and reduce expenses to keep the house warm during the winter. In addition, by addressing the insulation issues, she will be able to keep her family healthy and reduce the risk of illness and cold. Since she has five children, it is very difficult for her to secure the basic things for living not to mention being able to address improving living conditions to a standard that is acceptable.

“Without this loan we will have cold and problems with heating this winter as we had before,” claims Sevdije.

The loan will help them to have a better life with comfortable conditions and improve the quality of life to an acceptable standard. In the future she hopes to offer a better education for their children. Sevdije and her family want to thank all Kiva lenders!

More information about this loan

This loan will support the economic aspirations of minority people in Kosovo. Roma people and ethnic Serbians have historically faced a tremendous amount of hardship in Kosovo, and are still socioeconomically and politically vulnerable. During the 1998-1999 war, the fighting displaced 250,000 people. Among those displaced were an estimated 80-90% of the region’s Roma population. Today, Roma and ethnic Serbians living in Kosovo still face discrimination and are excluded from many aspects of society, including fair political representation and high rates of unemployment. By supporting this loan you are helping provide opportunity to marginalized populations.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
