She makes a living weaving guipiles (woven blouses) and cortes (woven skirts) which are typical dress in her area. She started this business by learning with her family and to date has 15 years of experience. She counts on her family to help her.

She has organised a group and is applying for a loan which she will invest in buying thread to make traditional local clothing. In the future she hopes to have a stable income which allows her to expand her business by weaving in different styles. The other members of the group make a living by growing coffee and weaving. One of the members could not be present when the photo was taken.

La señora Fabiana es madre soltera, tiene 35 años de edad, no tuvo la oportunidad de estudiar, tiene 2 hijos y 1 de ellos esta estudiando, se dedica a la tejeduría de cortes y guipiles típicos, inició este negocio aprendiendo con su familia y hasta la fecha lleva 15 años de experiencia. Cuenta con el apoyo de su familia.

Organiza un grupo y solicita un préstamo que lo invertirá en la compra de hilos para tejer guipiles y cortes típicos del lugar, espera en el futuro contar con un capital estable que le permita agrandar su negocio tejiendo variedad de estilos. Las demás integrantes del grupo se dedican a la siembra de café y a tejeduría. Una de las integrantes no pudo asistir cuando tomaron la foto.

About Asociación ASDIR

ASDIR (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral Rural - Association for the Development of Rural Communities) is a community-based organization that works to promote development in the villages and communities where it serves. It was founded in 1999 in the village of Nimasac, Totonicapán Department, by a handful of local men and women to support community projects and group loans. Today ASDIR has 5 offices across 3 departments (Totonicapán, Sololá and Suchitepéquez) serving more than 6,000 clients, most of them in rural communities.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
