Maricela
Maricela, 29, is a young, hardworking woman. She completed third grade in primary school. She and her husband work in agriculture (growing coffee). They have three children. The oldest is in school the other one is in Kindergarten and the youngest is two-years-old.

They have much experience working the land and she’s been doing so for ten years since she learned this line of work form her parents who have always worked in agriculture. Her only economic activity is growing coffee and they’ve been acquiring their land through inheritance from her parents and her parents-in-laws. The challenges found in this activity are drops in prices and the heavy rain (climactic factor) since competition is not a problem in this line of work. Her field is 50 meters away from her house and both she and her husband are involved in working it.

Her future plans and dreams as a mother is that her crops become more productive and to buy more parcels of land so that her children will be able to attend school and also have an estate in which to work. Her dream is to see her children attain a better standard of living in future and to use some of the profits from her crops to make some home improvements and the other part to buy new coffee plants.

Because of this, Maricela has requested a loan from Comixmul Cooperative to buy 8 sacks of 18-46-0 fertilizer, 10 sacks of urea, 8 sacks of coffee growing formula and nitrate among others to protect her crop and to provide better care.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
