The group BENKADI is composed of four married women, who average 46 years of age and three children each. They live in traditional extended families with their husbands, co-wives, brothers, and sons in the NIEBALA district of Bougouni City. They know one another through ties of community, friendship, and commerce. To bolster their financial capacity for operating their businesses better, they joined the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso and are now on their fourth loan. The three previous ones were correctly paid back.

This group of women does commerce in artisanal jewelry through MARIAM, who is the second woman sitting from the left in the photo. She intends to use her loan to purchase 20 dozen chains and earrings from makers in Bamako. Accepting cash or credit in Bamako and at home, she makes her sales to a customer base composed essentially of women. She envisions making an average monthly profit of 25,000 francs CFA that will be invested in her business and used to pay back the loan.

Le groupe BENKADI est constitué de 4 femmes toutes mariées ayant une moyenne d’âge de.46 ans et. 3 enfants. Elles vivent dans des familles traditionnelles élargies avec leurs maris, coépouses, frères et fils dans le quartier NIEBALA de la ville de Bougouni.
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de voisinage, d’amitié et de commerce. Pour renforcer leur capacité financière afin de mieux faire leur commerce, elles ont adhéré à l’institution de microfinance Soro Yiriwaso avec laquelle elles sont à leur 4ème prêt. Les 3 précédents prêts ont été correctement remboursés. Ce groupe de femmes fait le commerce de bijoux de fabrication artisanales à travers MARIAM, elle est la 2ème femme assise dans la photo de la gauche vers la droite Elle compte acheter avec son prêt, 20 douzaines de chaines et de boucles d’oreille avec les fabricants de Bamako. Elle effectue ses ventes à BOUGOUNI et à domicile, en détail au comptant et à crédit à une clientèle composée essentiellement de femmes.
Elle envisage réaliser un bénéfice mensuel moyen de 25.000FCFA qui sera investi dans les activités et rembourser le prêt.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
