The businesses of the members are varied and include vegetable sales, a corner store, knitting sweaters, blanket weaving, sewing of skirts, fruit sales and sales of chicharrón (a Bolivian dish made of pork).

The loan will be used in some small businesses of which Josefina is a member. She became a member of the field partner one year ago at the invitation of some members of the group. Josefina currently has a business selling chicharrón. She says that she learned this business seven years ago, when she noticed the possibility of selling this product in her area.

Josefina will use this loan to increase the capital of her business by buying pork from wholesalers in the city of El Alto. She will use the pork to make chicharrón and sell it in her area. She says that this business allows her to earn income to pay for as many of her household expenses as possible. She lives with her partner and has four children.

Asked what she likes about the field partner, Josefina says that she likes the training programs on credit and on health.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
