Chantheng's Group
In this Group: Chantheng, Nguonmom
Chantheng is married and a mother of three children, one of whom is still in school. She is a resident of the Sa Ang district in the Kandal Province of Cambodia.

Chantheng manages two hectares of farmland on which she grows rice as her family's primary source of income. She grows vegetables while her husband is a fisherman to earn extra money. She has been involved in her current business for 32 years, and she is able to earn about 26,400 KHR per day.

Chantheng’s group comprises two female members. She is in her first loan cycle and her group member is in her fourth cycle. Now they are applying for the same amount of 185,000 KHR each.

As the leader, Chantheng will use her loan portion to buy a below-the-ground latrine for her family. She hopes that her family and children will be able to enjoy improved sanitation conditions.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of VisionFund Cambodia’s initiative to expand access to clean water and/or sanitation to poor rural households.

Water filter loans provide poor households with clean, safe drinking water without requiring it to be boiled over wood fires. This protects borrowers’ health and Cambodia’s precious forests. Today, many rural Cambodians depend on rainwater, boreholes and surface water -- none of which are regarded as safe sources of fresh water. Walter filters provide a safer, easier and more economic alternative. VisionFund Cambodia is partnering with Hydrologic Social Enterprise to get water filters to families who need them most.

Latrine loans help households build standard, housed latrines for improved sanitation. In rural Cambodia, sanitation poses a major challenge for those who cannot afford to construct a household latrine. Every year, thousands of children die and many others fail to thrive due to dehydration, poor immunity and malnutrition caused by diarrhea and poor sanitation. VisionFund Cambodia is offering credit to change this picture.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
