Maria Vicenta
María Vicenta is a feisty and happy woman. She is 30 years old and completed primary school. She is a mother to two children: the oldest is eight years old and in primary school, while the youngest is two years old. Both are still dependent on their mother. María is a widow and, since her husband died some years ago, she has had only her children for company. She counts on them unconditionally. María is a farmer, her husband having taught her to work the land. María sows and grows potatoes, beans and corn. She works her own land as she was able to buy it with her husband when he was alive. It is easy for her to look after her crops and so they are always healthy and free from plagues.

María is currently applying for help to buy certified potato seeds, manure, fertilisers and other supplies in order to grow healthy and safe crops.

María's goal is to be able to grow quality potatoes, with which she will be able to earn higher profits and increase her income for her and her children. With these extra profits, she will be able to reïnvest in her crops, repay her debt and continue to enjoy these profits. As a mother, María's dream is to give her children the best possible education that they can later apply in their lives and in their work. She hopes that they will be able to use what they learn both at home and at university.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
