Elena
Doña Elena is 46 years old and the mother of four children. She is a housewife and farmer. Elena is married and completed six years of her primary school education. Her children and her husband help her with the various farm duties: weeding, harvesting, pruning, fertilizing, and composting. Elena has been farming for more than 20 years since her parents were the ones who taught her at an early age how to work the land. Thanks to God, they were able to give her a plot of land of her own.

Elena is requesting a loan from the COMIXMUL cooperative so that she can buy fertilizers, compost, foliar plant food, and other items since these products keep the leaves in excellent condition and result in a quality plant. In the end, she hopes to achieve a good harvest.

Her plans include buying some more land since she plans to cultivate a wider variety of crops so that she can be more competitive. Her output will also be more attractive so that it can be exported and be known as the best in the area and in the country.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for female farmers who produce a variety of products (onion, garlic, eggplant, spinach, mango, strawberries, etc.). Loan terms will vary depending on need, and borrowers can choose to make a "bullet" payment timed with harvest profits. Agricultural loans are considered risky in Honduras due to external forces like unpredictable weather and worldwide crop prices. As a result, many traditional financial institutions are unwilling to offer these loans. With Kiva funding, COMIXMUL will be able to reach more borrowers with agricultural loans tailored to their needs.
