This group was formed over a year ago and is in the third round of funding by the Comité de Mujeres Emprendedoras (“Women Entrepreneurs Committee”) programme that has established the Fundación Paraguaya. Members are based in the Reducto neighbourhood of the city of San Lorenzo and are engaged in a variety of activities such as selling clothes, food, and natural remedies, either from home or door to door. The group is a stable group and there is solidarity and co-operation amongst its members. They ensure repayments are made on time and whenever a member becomes ill, others, through fundraising activities, come to her assistance. They have managed to save around $250, which they have invested in a local co-operative.

This latest round of financing is a testimony to the women’s strong desire to improve their economic conditions and self-esteem through performing key activities and mutual assistance. This is an important process leading to the strengthening of the bonds within Paraguayan families.

In accordance with the business activities of members, this loan is to purchase meat, cheese, vegetables, children and adult clothes, ice cream, soft drinks and beer. They also wish to diversify into mail-order business selling cosmetics.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
