The “Perlas Doradas” (Golden Pearls) communal bank will start the fifth cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Collpani Focal Center. It has 8 members led by a governing board presided over by Angélica. The communal bank members carry out a variety of businesses among which are: dental office, wallet making, vegetable sales, neighborhood store, coca leaf sales and chinaware rental.

The loan they’ll take out will benefit small micro businesswomen like Angélica. She indicates that she’s been part of Pro Mujer for four cycles having joined thanks to an invitation by one of the institution’s promoters that visited her at home. She currently has a business making wallets. She says she learned this business years ago when she learned the sewing technique for these products.

The loan she’ll take out now is to increase capital. She will buy leather at wholesale in stores in El Alto and after making them will sell them in her sales space. This way of working allows her to generate income to support her family the best way possible since she’s married and has four children. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes the training and the credit.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
