Roeun, 60, has six children and is a villager from Thmor Koul district of Battambang province where rice farming is a popular business. She earns a living farming rice while her husband works for others for a fee during his spare time away from the rice paddy. Roeun has engaged in her current business for 16 years. She is able to earn about 39,600 KHR per day. Roeun has never taken out a loan with VisionFund (Kiva’s partner) before. She is applying for a new loan of 2,000,000 KHR to buy 10 sacks of fertilizer and insecticide. She hopes to minimize loss due to insects and boost her crops with a good yield so that she can save more income for when she is older.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
