José Luis
Luis is 44 years old. He is married and has 4 children. He has worked in construction and security, but 17 years ago when his last work contract ended, he decided to work for himself, thanks to advice from a friend who worked as a street vendor. He began selling avocados and fruit, and now he also sells fish. Thanks to this work, he has been able to earn money to support his family. He is a hard worker, with a desire to succeed. He goes out to sell his products starting at 4:30 in the morning and works until 2:30pm. He likes this schedule very much because besides in addition to work, he has time to take care of his home and care for his children. Luis knows he needs to keep fighting for his family, so for this reason he is requesting a loan that he will invest in the purchase of portable coolers and wholesale fish and fruit, in order to take advantage of the discounts they offer. In this way he will have a variety of fresh products available to meet the needs and tastes of his customers. Like everyone, Luis also wants to make his dreams a reality. In particular, he wants to save money to set up his own fish shop, which would enable him to offer employment opportunities and to improve the quality of life of his whole family.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
