The “Florecita de Chonchocoro” (Chonchocoro Little Flower) communal bank will start its third cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Cascada Focal Center. It has 8 members led by a governing board presided over by Juana. The communal bank members carry out a variety of businesses like: milk sales, cheese sales and blanket weaving.

The loan they’ll take out will benefit small micro businesswomen like Juana. She indicates that she’s been in Pro Mujer for three cycles having joined thanks to an invitation from her friends who are part of the institution. She currently has a business selling milk. She relates that she learned this business thanks to her parents’ initiative since they had worked in this activity for years. When she decided to get a spouse she started to work independently.

The loan she’ll take out now is to increase capital. She will buy a cow from livestock fairs in adjacent communities and after raising it will sell the milk in her sales space. This way of working allows her to generate income to support her home as possible because she’s in a common law relationship and has two children. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes the savings she generates.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
