Juan
Juan raises cattle to produce milk that he sells to Pil Andina (an industrial milk plant). He lives in his own house with his wife and their children in the community of Huayrocondo, in the Batallas area of the Los Andes province, in the department of La Paz. This is 3 hours from the city of La Paz. Juan has a number of head of an improved breed of cattle who need a lot of care, given the area's weather conditions.

Juan needs a loan to buy supplementary feed. This way, he can improve the nutritional status of his cows and their milk production. This feed contains soy husks, a by-product of industrial soy production which is very bulky. It has a high carbohydrate content (75%) and soluble sugars (2%). In the highlands, there is a shortage of available protein, mainly during the dry season (from June through November). This is why it is important to supplement the feed with soybean husks, which provide protein for the cattle.

Juan's dream is to increase his herd of cattle, while maintaining their good health.

This is the second time that he has requested a loan with IMPRO, and the first time with KIVA.

About IMPRO

IMPRO is a small non-profit organization that has been offering micro credit to the working poor in the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto since 1995. IMPRO’s goal is to fight poverty by offering loans to small business owners who cannot access credit through the regular banking system due to a lack of guarantees or collateral.

To ensure that everyone has access to credit, IMPRO maintains a low interest rate by minimizing operational costs. IMPRO’s partnership with Kiva, which began in 2007, has allowed IMPRO to expand its services while maintaining these low interest rates.
