Jelar is married, 26 years old, and the mother of two sons. Her husband is a carpenter, and she helps by tending their farm and harvesting corn for sale. She took out a loan from GDMPC microcredit, which she joined recently, in order to buy fertilizer, such as manure. She plans to cultivate the unused land on their farm in order to earn more income for the future of the entire family.
Gata Daku Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GDMPC) was founded in 1992 by 32 farmer-members to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities and other support services. Today, it has over 15,000 members located in upland, lowland and coastal regions of the Philippines, and offers credit, savings, education, and various social services.
