The group has consolidated activities that allow them to have a low debt ratio. Teamwork has allowed them to have a significant growth in financial resources that has brought benefits to all of their families. They maintain business activities keeping a good quality of product and ease for their customers.

Carmen has been a leader in the Puntarenas area in supporting women who want to better themselves and get ahead. She lives in the "20 de Noviembre" neighborhood in Puntarenas, a place with a lot of poverty and social problems. She is 54 years old and lives with her three children and she has one grandson. With effort and work she has managed to give her children an education; one of them is a nurse. She also brings together hardworking and enterprising women to support them with their loans from Fundación Mujer, being the only income-earners in their households.

The objective of this loan is to purchase merchandise such as catalog products and household appliances that she is going to purchase in the duty-free shopping zone, well known in the southern part of Costa Rica, taking advantage of the season where there is a lot of income from bonuses and savings and people want to buy items, whether to give to others or to themselves, a situation that she, due to her experience and knowledge of the market, can make the most of. Carmen belongs to the "Banco Mujer Creciendo Juntas" and serves in the position of treasurer.

Standing out among her goals is getting ahead so that she and her children will have a better future, so that they can get an education, and she can have support so that her business grows more each day. For now the greatest difficulty has been economic but she has found in this program a support for her small-business venture.

This is a strong group that has worked with Fundación Mujer since the year 2004, fulfilling, with this one, twelve loan requests, with more than 20 women from the community of "20 de Noviembre" in the area of Puntarenas having been involved in the group. They have demonstrated work, growth, unity and solidarity and their payments have been good. The group has demonstrated good payment conduct and has renewed their loans year after year. Their activities are generating revenue that allows them to travel abroad to purchase merchandise (Nicaragua and Panamá). They have their own establishments, their own equipment, and offer a wide range of products in the places where they live.

More information about this loan

In Costa Rica, funding for microfinance institutions is hard to come by, and many institutions find themselves having difficulty growing and reaching all the demand for loans that exist. Kiva works with Fundacion Mujer because it attends a very marginalized population in Costa Rica, with a specific focus on women. In addition to the loan, Fundacion Mujer provides specialized training programs for their borrowers on everything from computer classes to salon training. Because of the difficulty in obtaining capital in Costa Rica, Fundacion Mujer cannot serve all the women that need loans. Therefore Kiva plays a unique role in helping Fundacion Mujer grow its portfolio and reach borrowers it otherwise would not be able to.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
