Stephen
Stephen is a farmer in the remote village of Kanyaryeru in the Kiruhura district. A married father of four children who are all in school, Stephen started cattle farming at the early age of 12, as it was the main economic activity in his village. After the death of his father when he was 20 years of age, he worked hard to take care of his mother through cattle farming until he started his own family.

Stephen has now started constructing a semi-permanent house to accommodate his mother and the family. He is requesting a loan of 2,000,000 shillings to complete his house; he will be using proceeds from the farm to service the requested loan.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
