Mercedes De Jesús
Mercedes, 38, is married and has four children. She’s been working in agriculture since she was 13-years-old; her father would take her along to help him and would tell her that she needed to learn to work because that would be useful when she had her own home.

Later she took up with someone but it wasn’t good but after that she met a good man that she married. She helps him with the agriculture and she also likes commerce; she sells fish and also likes the clothing business even though her life is very demanding because she must rise at 4:30 in the morning to prepare her husband’s breakfast and then get her children ready for school and after that head out to sell.

The loan she’s asking Fundación Campo for is to buy two gallons of herbicide to control weeds, a bag of seeds and 8 sacks of manure. With this investment she will plant corn. She’s already prepared the soil but needs to buy the supplies. She dreams with being able to buy a piece of land to build a brick house since she currently lives in a house that is of metal sheeting on land that doesn’t belong to her.

These loans are smaller than the typical loans offered by this field partner, and guarantee requirements are also reduced. Individuals who receive this type of loan also get access to technical assistance, information on good environmental practices and increased access to farm inputs like fertilizer. This is considered a high risk loan due to the population and loan purpose, and CrediCampo is one of the very few institutions in El Salvador willing to working with these farmers.
