Ruom, in her early 50s, is a resident from the Moung Russey district of Battambang province where rice farming is the popular business in the area. She has five children, two of whom are students in the local school. Her main source of income is from three hectares each of rainy season and dry season paddy crop. The 20 years' engagement in her current business has returned her about 32,000 KHR per day. Never before a member of VisionFund (Kiva’s partner), Ruom is taking her first loan of 3,000,000 KHR in order to pay for plowing fees and to buy potash and rice seed. She hopes that she can grow her crops fruitfully and make a good yield to relieve her family’s financial burden.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
