Living in the same district, 3 women and 2 men have formed a loan group to request support from the microfinance institution U-IMCEC for increasing their working capital. This loan group is: JAPPALE SOR DAGA 1.

Their president, Ms. Astou, purchases millet and sugar to make porridges, such as 'thiakry', and juice drinks that she sells to her customers. She goes door to door and counts as her customers the inhabitants of her district and neighborhood. She is married and helps cover family expenses. She is 53 years old and has five children, of whom the oldest is 16 years old, and the youngest is 5.

Astou loves her work and has thirty years of experience in this domain. She has always dreamed of becoming a major merchant who would travel the world over. In the meanwhile, she would like very much to open a stall, where she will display her food products and stay in one place, given her age.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
