Rigoberto, 18, is single. He learned to work in agriculture since he was a boy; his father taught him. He never went to school and has always worked in agriculture because that’s his only source of income to subsist. He plants 14,000 square meters of corn on very steep hillsides which makes his work very much more difficult because the work he does daily to care for his crops to keep them in good condition and yield higher harvests is very hard. He carries his fertilizer on his back all the way to his corn fields because they are inaccessible by vehicle. To buy supplies he takes a bus from his community to the nearest city, a 20 minute trip.

The loan he’s asking for is to buy 8 sacks of manure among other farm supplies to plant 14,000 square meters of corn and 14,000 square meters of summer sorghum. It’s very difficult for him to go to the city to buy small amounts of supplies so if the loan is approved he will be able to buy everything in one trip which will save time and money. By having all the supplies at home, he will be able to provide his corn field with care in a timely fashion which will lead to increased production and income to repay his loan and to feed his family. He plans to work hard and to save money to buy a small lot to build a house to live in with his family since they currently live in a house made of mud and twigs.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of a project to help young men and women in El Salvador (under age 26) launch their own businesses. The field partner is reducing the guarantee for these individuals, who normally would not have access to loans due to their lack of experience. Unemployment for young people is high in El Salvador, a fact that motivates many of them to leave the country instead of searching for work. Aside from access to financing, clients will also be grouped together according to their business types to receive training from CrediCampo's social development unit, and to share advice and support with one another.
