The “El Mirador” communal bank has 8 members, seven women and one man. The members of the group carry out a variety of different activities. The bank president is Sofía, 42. She has two children age 9 and 13. Her activity is selling snacks and sandwiches in her sales stand located in El Torno. Sofía rises very early in the morning to make the sandwiches and also to make lunch for her family. Then she goes out to sell this in the morning. Sofía will use the money from the loan to buy ingredients to make her snacks. Sofía is a responsible, hardworking person who is grateful to the institution for the financial support it provides so she can have better quality of life and continue improving for her family’s well-being.

Sofia se levanta desde tempranas horas de la mañana para elaborar sus sándwich y también para prepara el almuerzo para su familia, después sale a vender todo esto por la mañana, con el dinero del crédito la Sra. Sofia comprara insumos para la elaboración de sus refrigerios, la Sra. Sofia es una persona responsable y trabajadora esta agradecida con la institución por el apoyo económico que le brinda para tener una mejor calidad de vida y seguir adelante superándose por el bienestar de su familia.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
