José has to drive a pickup truck to the city, 12 kilometers away, to purchase agricultural supplies. He then drives back to his farm, where he, his children, and grandchildren carry everything 0.5 - 1.2 km on their backs.
José is requesting a loan from the Campo Foundation to pay rent for the land he farms, repair fences, and purchase all of the supplies he needs for the planting, care, and harvest of corn and sorghum crops. The loan will provide working capital to produce grains that are the heart of Salvadoran families' daily diet (1 hectare corn, .45 hectare sorghum), for controlling weeds, and raising chickens and calves in the dry season.
If the rainy season, with God's blessing, leads to a good harvest, José hopes to purchase more land. His main goal is to teach his grandchildren to work and to show love and respect for nature. José's grandchildren will no doubt go to school and become professionals, but a good man knows how to earn a living any honorable way he can, by the sweat of his brow.
