Gerardo
Gerardo, 60, is married and lives with his wife and one daughter. With this loan he plans to buy inputs like compost, fumigants, and also labor to help him. He hopes to maintain his plantations so that they don't suffer any damage and he doesn't lose any of his production, which will let him generate more income from his coffee farm to contribute to his family. He doesn't have enough capital to buy the aforementioned products since he is low income and doesn't have any way to get the money. For that reason he asked for his first loan from FUDECOSUR. He hasn't had loans before from state banks, but FUDECOSUR has given him a loan more easily and with a much lower interest rate.

More information about this loan

FUDECOSUR works in one of the poorest regions of Costa Rica, where microfinance institutions (MFIs) are scarce or have a hard time keeping up with demand for small loans. By providing mostly agricultural loans, FUDECOSUR reaches rural borrowers that many MFIs consider to be too risky. However, this has also made it more difficult for the organization to find stable sources of capital to lend. Kiva's flexible, risk-tolerant capital plays a critical role in helping FUDECOSUR grow its portfolio and support even more borrowers.
